New installation is concrete where there was none, or where the old walk was removed and never restored. The grade and the joint layout are what decide whether it lasts.
Building a walk where there was none
- Grade set so water drains toward the curb
- Base prepared and compacted before any concrete arrives
- Poured to DOT depth for the use it will take
- Control joints cut at the right spacing so cracking is planned, not random
- All permits filed and the finished work presented for inspection
Why a new install costs more than a replacement
New installation costs more per square foot than replacement because there is no existing base to work from. Excavation depth, how much fill has to be brought in, and the width the City sets are what move the number.
Excavation, base, forms, pour
- Line and width confirmed. The City decides where the walk sits and how wide it is. We confirm that before quoting, not after.
- Excavate and build base. Dug to depth and filled in compacted layers. This is most of the labour on a new install.
- Forms set to grade. Forms are what hold the fall toward the curb. Set them wrong and no amount of finishing fixes it.
- Pour and joint. Poured to the depth the use requires, with control joints cut so any cracking happens where it was planned.

The City decides the line and the width
A new walk needs the permit before excavation, not before pouring. The alignment and width are set by the City and are not negotiable at the quoting stage.
