The apron is the concrete between your garage and the curb. It carries vehicle weight, so it is poured deeper than the sidewalk either side of it and it cracks quickly when it is not.
The strip your car crosses every day
- Poured at vehicle-rated depth rather than walking depth
- Base compacted to take repeated loading
- Curb cut tied in so the transition from roadway is smooth
- Joints placed so the apron and the sidewalk can move independently
- Permit filed and the work inspected
Why an apron is not priced like a sidewalk
An apron costs more per square foot than the sidewalk beside it, and it should. It is poured deeper and often reinforced, because a car crossing it every day is a load a walking surface was never designed for.
Built for vehicle weight from the base up
- Depth and reinforcement decided. What crosses it decides how it is built. A passenger car and a delivery truck are not the same spec.
- Old apron out, base compacted. Aprons fail from underneath. The base gets more attention here than anywhere else on the frontage.
- Poured deep and jointed away from the walk. Joints let the apron and the sidewalk move independently instead of cracking each other.
- Cured before any vehicle crosses. We give you the date. Driving on it early is the most common way a good apron gets ruined.
Why aprons crack, and what owners ask about it
Why did my apron crack so fast?
Can you widen the curb cut?
How long before I can drive on it?
Curb cuts cannot be widened on assumption
An apron sits across the public sidewalk, so it is permitted as sidewalk work. Changing the width of the curb cut is a separate approval and cannot be assumed.
